Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of monetary motivation on the relationship between pain-related fear and avoidance behavior.
Methods: 80 healthy students attending the university were randomly assigned to one of four groups according to the type of pain-related fear(high or low) and monetary motivation(high or low).
Results: Experimental results showed that the autonomic nervous system was more active in the high pain-related fear group than the low pain-related fear group. In addition, the interaction effects of pain-related fear and motivation on avoidance behavior were significant. In the low pain-related fear group, regardless of monetary condition there was no significant difference of the delay time performing task but in the high pain-related fear group, when the monetary motivation is high the delay time was significantly shorter.
Conclusions: This study provides empirical evidence supporting the revised fear-avoidance model, and empirically proves that avoidance behavior can be suppressed even if pain-related fear occurs when valuable goals are protected through goal shielding mechanism.
